You’ve Got Mail! Summer Reading Pals

The project was a reading initiative for rising second and third grade students. During the summer, students received new level-reading books in the mail. The goal was to continue student reading and to reduce summer slide in reading skills.

Results

A majority of students showed an increase in their DRA level based on a comparison between their end-of-the-year DRA level (June 2013) and their September 2013. Second graders - 69% increase reading level, 10% maintained level over summer. Third graders - 49% increased reading level, 10% maintained. This idea was shared at the May 2014 Literacy Specialists’ meeting. Several schools have replicated this project.
